R.B. ELLIS
Official Biography
RB Ellis is a novelist from Oklahoma. He fell for fantasy at a young age and obtained a MFA in Creative Writing and MA in English because of his heroes. Now, he spends his time reading, writing, and editing fiction; wasting time looking at truck parts; and roughhousing with two kids and two huskies. He loves to travel and hopes to become a full-time author, living a fantasy and traveling the world with his wife. His work includes two fantasy fiction novels, The Arena and The Exiled, and a USA Today and Wall Street Journal bestselling non-fiction novel.
The Passion of Writing
I fell in love with reading when I first read Harry Potter and it led me down the beautiful path of literature. It was recommended to me by a great man I wish was still around. Fantasy consumed me, and I started writing poetry and short stories.
When I read Eragon and discovered Chris was only fifteen when he wrote his book, I started writing a novel of my own. Of course, it was unsuccessful. I went to a small college and graduated with a two-year degree in English because I had no idea what else to do.
For a while, I felt stagnant, like I wasn’t going anywhere. That led me to join the army, like my dad…and my grandpa was Navy, so why not follow the familiy tradition? I wanted to experience the military too. I hated it and loved it. I stationed in Hawaii, made it to sergeant (E5), and deployed to Afghanistan for nearly twelve months. After three years of service, I wanted to get home to family and friends.
I finished a BA in English and went on to finish my MFA in English and Creative Writing and MA in English. Then I wanted to finish the novel I started. After some planning, some writing courses, and thousands of words, it became far different than what I planned in high school! It was a different novel entirely.
